Time For Pond Leaves

Oct 24, 2019 | By: Mike Moats Photography

In October as the colorful Fall leaves are starting to fall from the trees, I like to go to one of the parks near my home where there is a small pond in the woods with a deck that I can set up on and photograph the leaves on the water.

Here is an image of the deck and the pond.

The color of the trees on the bank reflect in the water, and I try to find leaves positioned in the color so I get that nice orange color surrounding the leaves and pine needles. I shoot these with the smallest f/stop numbers in the f/6 range to help blur any details in the color.  I use a Tamron 18-400 zoom lens to reach out.  The surface tension around the leaf and the pine needles show the blue color from the sky.

In other areas of the water where there are no colors reflecting, the water is dark under the leaves, so in this image I have the leaf and needles standing out against the black water.  The original image out of the camera, the water is not that black, but just a dark blue, so I turned the water to solid black with Nik Software's Viveza.
